Atlanta Market continues to rebound

Even the displays got into the act when it came to safety precautions.

Last week’s Atlanta Gift and Home Market here, the second major trade show of the new year, continued a pattern of the slow but steady return of physical markets to the industry.

While attendance probably hovered around the 50% mark, exhibitors working the show reported retailers were coming off strong holiday seasons and needed goods for spring and throughout the rest of the year. Most exhibitors said they came into the show week with modest expectations that had been surprisingly exceeded in many cases.

Masks were very much the standard wardrobe for everyone working the Atlanta gift and home show last week.

But clearly the business of shows remains a work in progress as evidenced by activity in the halls of AmericasMart:

  • Health and safety precautions were front and center with mask wearing, temperature checks and hand sanitizer stations far more prevalent than tote bags, product demos and mimosa bars.
  • Buying activity, as it was in Dallas, was strongest in stay-at-home product categories like home entertaining, outdoor, kitchenware and the ever-ubiquitous candle business.

Chelsea House taps Ross as showroom designer

Mark Ross has joined home décor designer and supplier Chelsea House as showroom designer.

In this role, he will work with Creative Director Bradshaw Orrell and his team.

“We undertook an extensive search to find the right designer that could reflect the sophistication and creativity of the products in the showroom presentation,” said Pam Cain, president of the Rocky Mount, N.C.-based company. “Mark and Bradshaw make a formidable team and the perfect pairing to continue to advance the inspiring and exciting showroom experience.”

Ross has more than 30 years of experience in visual merchandising and product development. Most recently, he spent 32 years serving various roles at Two’s Company including bringing permanent showrooms in Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York to life, managed the direction and styling of the bi-annual sales catalog, scouted trends at shows in Paris, London and in Asia. He was also involved in new product and he was ultimately named the head of the visual merchandising and product development division in addition to acting as creative director.
