Emmanuel Christian Academy was established in 1975 as a ministry of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Our philosophy of Christian education is that "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (Proverbs 9:10). Therefore, all education must be taught from the standpoint that the Word of God is absolute truth, that Christ is to be the center of our lives, and that God has a will for each of our children. We believe that the Christian school is a ministry of the local church to the Christian home. That is why ECA seeks to accept only those students who come from Christian families and share our philosophy.
God has richly blessed the Academy since its founding in 1975. Our program begins with K-4 and continues through the 12th grade. We are pleased that the Lord is using so many of our graduates in full-time Christian service; several have returned to accept faculty positions at the Academy.
We rely heavily on the A Beka Book publications for our academic textbooks. This curriculum is hailed throughout the nation for its strong integration of biblical truth with a high level of scholastic training. We also use another leading Christian school publisher, Bob Jones University Press. English, math, science, history, and Bible are the subjects comprising the core curriculum of Emmanuel Christian Academy. High school electives include Spanish I and II, band, choir, ensembles, handbells, home economics, physics, pre-calculus,calculus, English Literature, American Literature, typing, advanced computer, and speech.
Students in all grades receive daily challenges from the Word of God, whether in Bible class or in chapel. Junior and senior high students attend chapel twice a week, while elementary chapel is held on Thursdays. The opening revival that is held for junior and senior high students has been productive, and ninth through twelfth graders began attending the annual school camp in 2005. Other special events during the year include the week of EBC's Missions Conference, the Student Leadership Seminar, and Spring Revivals.
Scholastically, ECA students perform well on standardized testing and among their peers in the Connecticut Association of Christian Schools (CACS). Since 1998, ECA students have average scores in the 87th percentile nationwide and the 69th percentile among AACS schools. Our high school students averaged 1050 on their SAT's while college-bound students average 1090 (out of 1600). Emmanuel students also exhibit proficiency when competing in the CACS Fine Arts testing, consistently receiving at least 50% of the academic awards given.
Emmanuel Christian Academy provides a competitive athletic program which includes boys' soccer, girls' volleyball, J.V. basketball, girls' and boys' varsity basketball, and J.V. and varsity cheerleading. The soccer team has won the CACS championship from 1997 through 2006 and the NEACS championships from 1997 through 2002 and again in 2005. The other three varsity squads have each won at least two CACS championships and at least one NEACS title during that time.
Throughout the year, students in the music and speech departments will present concerts, plays, and programs. ECA currently offers choir and handbells on the elementary, junior high, and high school levels. Many Emmanuel music and speech students compete in the Fine Arts Competition, and those who win are encouraged to travel to Greenville, South Carolina to participate in the national competitions each April. Certainly more important than competition and concerts is the opportunity that our senior high music groups have to participate in church services throughout New England. Over the past calendar year, our students have provided special music in nearly a dozen churches, many of which are too small to benefit from a regular program of special music. We thank God for the opportunities that we are given and for the faithfulness of our students to use their talents for the Lord.
Emmanuel graduates typically go on to higher education (from 2004 to 2007, the figure is 100%), and, more importantly, at least three-fourths of ECA alumni choose to attend Christian colleges including Bob Jones University, Maranatha Baptist Bible College, Clearwater Christian College, and Pensacola Christian College. Although Emmanuel Christian Academy is not accredited through the state of Connecticut, its graduates have been accepted to other institutions such as West Point, The Citadel, Virginia Tech, Cornell, Central Connecticut State University, and the University of Connecticut.
