In an interview this week with Fox Business, National Retail Federation President and CEO Matthew Shay said he expects a relatively good holiday shopping season for retailers.

Holiday shopping this year will be “unlike any we’ve ever seen,” said Shay, adding that he thinks it will be historic in many ways including a departure from what he called “cherished traditions.”

In response, Shay said the NRF is launching major campaign to educate consumers about what he called two new traditions: shop safe and start early.

He said that consumers are in good shape with about a trillion dollars in firepower, including about $900 billion in savings.

“We think the holiday season has the potential to be good,” Shay said. He believes deals will start early, with some coming out in October. “And consumers have the resources to respond.”
