Color development and trend specialist Pantone has named Illuminating — a bright yellow — and Ultimate Gray as its 2021 colors of the year, picking two contrasting colors to show how different colors can come together for creative design solutions in and outside the home.
As with selections in the past, these colors aim to give design direction in fashion, home furnishings and industrial design. Company color experts chose both tones based on inspirations from travel, art, fashion, and even film and entertainment, noting in a release that the pairing is “a marriage of color conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.”
“The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a color combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”
